Meeting Minutes: June 11, 2015


Members present: A. Members absent: Andre Ariew, Jim Baumann, David Bergin, Tim Evans, Jung Ha-Brookshire, Karen Hebert, Naresh Khatri, Tony Lupo, Peter Nebelek, Marty Steffens, Mahesh Thakkar, Vitor Trindade, Harry Tyrer, William Wiebold, and Don Sievert (MURA).

Approval of Minutes

The minutes of 3-18-15gfm and 4-2-15 were approved, as presented.

Discussion Items

Handbook Changes - Monnier.  Changes to the Faculty Handbook pertaining to Article III (Registration and Withdrawals), Article IV (Student Absences), and Article IX (Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates) were covered by Monnier. Policy changes are already in place; alterations voted on today apply only to the handbook. Regarding the policy change to extend the last day to withdraw from a course (now no later than 5 p.m. on the first day of the last week of classes), Monnier reported that more students are withdrawing and are doing so later in the semester. She will make a comparison of number of withdrawals before and after the change and will pass the results on to Art Jago (new chair of the Academic Affairs Subcommittee). The rules were suspended and a vote was taken to accept the changes with a typo error amendment to Article IV.2 (delete “to” in first line). The motion to accept the changes with the amendment passed unanimously.

Update on Race Relations Committee – Hudson.  The committee (consisting of twelve members) has met three times and all members have attended one or more meetings. Discussions are centering on naming the problems related to race relations on the MU campus and examining possible solutions. At present, the committee members are attempting to get acquainted and come to a common understanding of the issues, also keeping in mind the efforts of the Diversity Committee. Meetings are currently closed door; invitations for others to attend will be the next phase. Meetings will continue to be held every other week for 2+ hours during the summer. Beneficial materials (articles, etc.) are presently being shared with the members to read. Rachel Brekhus is working on getting some of these materials posted to the Council website.

Service Award Plaques - Roberts.  Plaques were distributed to those in attendance who are completing their terms on Faculty Council.

Standing Committee Reports

Diversity Committee – Speck. The committee is moving forward with the diversity requirement for campus and the Title IX policy work. The summit re: sexual assault on campus to be held June 20 was announced. Three from Faculty Council will be attending.


Council went into closed session at 4:05 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 4:55 p.m.
