James Tarr

James TarrAssociate Professor, Department of Learning Teaching & Curriculum

Dr. James Tarr received his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Illinois State University in 1997 and joined the faculty at the University of Missouri in 2000. His research interests include the development of probabilistic reasoning and the impact of curriculum on student learning. He has served as Co-Principal Investigator of numerous grants focused on the impact of mathematics curricula on student learning and the classroom learning environment. Funded by the National Science Foundation, his current project, Comparing Options in Secondary Mathematics: Investigating Curricula (COSMIC) is an evaluation of secondary mathematics curriculum. He has published 7 book chapters as well as research articles in a number of scholarly journals, such as Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, Journal of Mathematical Behavior, Statistics Education Research Journal, Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, Mathematics Education Research Journal, School Science and Mathematics, Teaching Mathematics in the Middle School, and Teaching Children Mathematics. He recently served as Co-Organizer of a Discussion Group at the Eleventh International Congress on Mathematical Education in Monterrey, Mexico. At MU, he teaches methods courses for preservice middle and secondary mathematics teachers, courses in an alternative certification Master's program, and numerous doctoral seminars in mathematics education.
