Division of Animal Sciences

Marcia Carlson Shannon is a Professor in the Division of Animal Sciences.  Marcia has been with the University of Missouri since 1998 and works as the State Extension Swine Nutrition Specialist. Marcia Shannon was promoted with tenure at the University of Missouri in 2004.  Her academic appointment is 77 % extension and 23 % research.

Shannon’s extension and research programs at MU have focused on swine nutrition and management issues related to nursery production, trace mineral nutrition, alternative feed ingredients, improving pork quality through nutrition, and improved feed efficiency.  In addition, Marcia works closely with other females in the livestock industry to promote and encourage women into leadership roles on their operations.  Marcia has developed a hands-on women in agriculture program called “Pearls of Production” which allows women to come together and be empowered to develop skills that they might not feel comfortable learning in front of their male counterparts.  The program “Pearls of Production” focuses on issues that women might deal with on a daily basis, network with other women in livestock production and get direct hands-on experience.

Dr. Shannon has received numerous awards for her Extension and Research efforts including 2000 Outstanding Extension Team Award, 2003 Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Teaching/Advising, 2005 J.W. Burch Extension State Specialist Award, 2007 national Association of County Agricultural Agents Achievement Award, 2008 Excellence in Education Award, 20012 Donald W. Fancher Provost Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension and 2013 Vice Provost’s Award for Outstanding Achievement On-Campus.
