Art received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University and his M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Administrative Science from Yale University. He joined the faculty in 1994 as the Chair of the Department of Management and was Acting Associate Dean for one year (1999-2000). He now holds the Frances Ridge Gay MBA Professorship.

Art's teaching and research interests include leadership and managerial decision-making. He has authored (with Victor Vroom) The New Leadership: Managing Participation in Organizations. He has served on the editorial board of Journal of Applied Psychology and currently serves on the board of the Journal of Management. He was twice a Guest Professor at the Johannes Kepler Universität (Linz, Austria) under the terms of two Senior Fulbright Awards (1984 and 1992).
